    Biometrics and GPS are often lumped together as 'attendance verification technologies.' In reality, they answer two entirely different questions.

    Biometrics verify *who* the person is. GPS verifies *where* the device is at a specific moment. Choosing the right one starts with identifying the specific operational risk your company needs to mitigate.

    Biometrics: High-Certainty Identity, Sensitive Data

    Fingerprint and facial recognition are effective at eliminating 'buddy punching' and shared ID cards. However, they require dedicated hardware, specialized infrastructure, and stricter security protocols.

    In many jurisdictions, biometric data is subject to rigorous data protection regulations. Always consult local labor laws and privacy requirements before implementation.

    GPS: Verifying Location, Not Biometric Identity

    GPS confirms that a mobile device was within the designated work zone during a check-in event. It does not provide absolute proof of who was holding the phone, so it shouldn't be viewed as a fail-safe anti-fraud tool.

    Its primary value lies in managing distributed teams, construction sites, and client offices where installing physical time clocks at every location is impractical.

    Spot Checks vs. Continuous Tracking

    There is a major difference between capturing a timestamped location during a check-in and tracking a worker's route all day. Following privacy-by-design principles, collecting less data reduces both legal exposure and storage overhead.

    RevoHR only captures location data at the moment of check-in and check-out to validate it against a geofence. It does not track employees continuously.

    Infrastructure and Scaling Costs

    Biometric systems usually involve hardware costs and on-site maintenance. GPS-based systems leverage the worker's own device, making them much easier to scale across numerous or temporary locations.

    For a single high-traffic headquarters, dedicated hardware makes sense. For 50 small, mobile worksites, the economic model favors a software-based approach.

    Handling Technical Exceptions

    GPS signal drops, dead batteries, device sharing, or failed biometric scans: no technology is perfect. A reliable system doesn't ignore these gaps; it flags them for manager review.
